Dylan Mortorell

I've just discovered the work of Australian artist Dylan Mortorell and really love it. The initial attraction for me has to be the black and white line drawing. Black Indian Ink, pen and brush being a medium that I'm using all the time at the moment. I'm not sure why it has such a strong appeal for me I think it's something to do with my love for text and reading.

The detail in Mortorell's work really draws you in. I also love the organic, lopsided quality of his work. I find myself strangely averse to using a ruler or measuring when I'm drawing even if an architectural image. I want it to flow and not be rigid.

It was no surprise to me that other work Mortorell produced last year involve a garden. One piece Base Drum Pond was exactly what it's name suggests another piece is called Garden At Lamington Drive. Lamington Drive is apparently a card board gallery, the walls clad in card rather than the usual materials. It sounds fascinating and I'll certainly like find out more about the venue.

You can see more amazing examples of Mortorell's drawings by clicking here. Surprisingly they really fit in with the posting below.

  1. I like his 'landscapes'. It's interesting that the human race still has a fascination with detail and pattern.

  2. Do you think that could be because photography captures things as they are so we want to embellish things?
